Ancient proverb states "Man who does not know history is the same as a monkey who is lost in the jungle". You can't understand and appreciate the present of a place without knowing its history. Before traveling crack a book and learn a bit of history of a place you want to visit. It will give you a deeper appreciation and understanding of the place.
With reading on about the history of a place you can know what a statue represents or how one monastery survived the passage of time or what event happened on someplace and made it special. Just by having a general knowledge you can later ask your tour guide to go into detail.
