Out of 4,000 Snow Leopards Worldwide, 1,000 Are Found in Our Country

The Ministry of Environment and Ecology of the Russian Federation, in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and Ecology of the Republic of Tatarstan, hosted an international conference in Kazan, the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan, from March 12-15, 2025, under the theme “Research and Conservation of the Snow Leopard: Let’s Unite Our Efforts.”

The snow leopard is a critically endangered species and is classified as “Vulnerable” according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List.

There are approximately 4,000 snow leopards in the world, with China leading the population with over 2,500. Mongolia has around 1,000 snow leopards, making it the second-largest population. Russia (including Altai, Tuva, Buryatia, and Krasnoyarsk) has reported a total of 87 snow leopards.

In recent years, Russia has been working on improving the conservation of snow leopards, increasing international cooperation, and implementing policies for their breeding and population growth.

Representatives from government agencies in 12 countries presented the results of conservation efforts, while non-governmental organizations and scientists from research institutions discussed the outcomes of their studies, presented the latest technological advancements in research and conservation, exchanged experiences, and defined the goals of future cooperation.

Twelve countries with snow leopard populations were represented at the conference, and from Mongolia, officials from the Ministry of Environment and Tourism, as well as the Chairman of the Scientific Council of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora under the Ministry, researchers from the Institute of Biology of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences, and representatives from the administration of the Uvs Lake Ramsar Wetland Site participated in the event.
