The Japan Sumo Association (JSA) has unveiled the Banzuke, the official rankings, for the first Grand Sumo tournament of 2025.
A total of 21 Mongolian sumo wrestlers are set to compete across four divisions at the Hatsu Basho. Yokozuna Terunofuji G. Gan-Erdene is preparing for his return to the ring in the first tournament of the new year, though his participation remains uncertain due to reports of his ongoing recovery from injury.
Meanwhile, Ozeki Hoshoryu S. Byambasuren will make his bid for the Yokozuna title next month. Kirishima B. Lkhagvasuren, who was demoted from Ozeki to Sekiwake, has dropped further in rank to the top of the right-hand side of the Maegashira division. With significant improvement in his injury, he has expressed a strong desire to make a powerful comeback and reclaim his previous rank.
In addition, Tamashoho E. Enkhmanlai will make his debut in the Makunouchi division. Moreover, Goseizan M. Munkh-Od has been promoted to the Sandanme division. There are nine Mongolian wrestlers each in the Makunouchi and Makushita divisions.
