Happy Nauryz 2022 for eagle hunters

Updated: Nov 18, 2022

Every year in March 21-22 marks the traditional Kazakh festival Nauryz, the sun festival.

Nauryz is a Persian word meaning "new day" or "new day". March 22, the day and night equinox, is celebrated by the Kazakh people as the "birthday" of spring and symbolizes the New Year in Bayan-Ulgii province. This is a grand celebration of the traditional holiday that symbolizes goodness and wealth, happiness, love and friendship.

Bayan-Ulgii is located in the rugged and remote Altai mountains tower over the surrounding basin of desert, steppe, forest, and taiga ecosystem. This part is sparsely populated inhabited mostly by Kazakhs, who are Muslim and speak Turkic language.

According to a demographic report issued by the National Statistical Office on the Kazakh minority in Mongolia, there are 114,506 Kazakhs, constituting 3.9 percent of Mongolia’s population and mostly living in Bayan-Ulgii, Khovd, Selenge and Tuv provinces and Ulaanbaatar city.

Nauryz is not only a state holiday for Kazakhs in Mongolia, it is celebrated in all countries of Central Asia, as well as Georgia, India, Iran, China, Turkey and others.

Many tours in western Mongolia offer the chance to meet or stay with Kazakh eagle hunters.
